White Silk Dragon Corset — abandonned project recap

Good news: I’ve successfully signed up for the Advanced Construction Tailoring class being taught this fall at Santa Monica. Hopefully, the grading class will be offered in the spring.

This is a project that was started probably in 2006 or 2007, most likely 2007, in one of LA Farthingale’s corset construction classes. I didn’t finish it at the time, setting it aside to be finished later. I have now reached the conclusion that stopping and starting sewing projects in mid-stream is a Really Dumb Thing for me to do. Why? Because invariably I have a plan, or made some change, or something, which I forget all about by the time I pick up the project X number of years later with the bright idea that I’ll finish it. This is one such project.

The silk is one that was ordered from China. I made the yellow silk with rainbow goldfish material into the first corset that I made for the first class that I took. For the second class, I broke out the really nice silk, but on the plus side I have more than enough to try again AND I have a yellow version as well. The yellow and the white both have the exact same design on it — chinese dragons. I do so love dragons!

I love love love that fabric!

Anyhoooo… This project was set aside after the outter shell was completed, all grommets were set, the busk was installed and I was ready to assemble the lining and put in the boning. That was it. That was that was left. Pulling it out of mothballs, I discovered that I’d modified the stitching on some of the exterior panels but not all so that it would fit better. Alas, I am no longer 150 lbs and so even that doesn’t fit me anymore. I gamely went ahead with the lining, trying to match up the seam allowances.

Ugh.

When it came to trying to fit the lining into the shell, it was a nightmare. I reached the conclusion that this would be a better project to abandon entirely, and start over from scratch at some point in the future. I have more than enough else to do, so no sense wasting time trying to finish a train wreck that doesn’t even fit me anymore. I figured I’d go ahead with the post-mortem as a reminder to myself to bulldoze through an entire project once it has been started.

outter shell - prettylining - egad!!!!

I had already cut out the busk by the time I figured out that I should to the post-mortem. I do have to admire the work that I did on that busk – it was amazingly well installed! *polishes nails on shirt* Anyway, there you have it.
