Brown and Turquoise Fairy Pillow
Every now and then, something fun and crazy just has to be sewn. My housemate is wanting a whole bunch of pillows for her daybed, and I figured that would be a great opportunity to experiment with different things that I’ve been wanting to either try or practice. She painted her room in shades of brown and is using turquoise as an accent color. While at Joanne’s one day I found some really nice brown and turq fabric which I picked up, and on the way home had an idea.
While looking around for something to use as the ruffle, I found a stash of flouncing which wasn’t long enough for this dress but turned out to be perfect for this pillow. I was finally able to use the ruffling foot which I’ve had for a good many years, and you can see below that it works very well. It’s surprisingly easy to use and does a very nice job. I’ll have to use it more often, since previously I never used it because it looked intimidating. heh.
I found the fairy that I used in the center of the pillow on Embroidery Library, my go-to place for embroidery designs. The design embroidered out quite nicely on the original attempt, but it did buckle in the some places. Looking at the bottom image, I notice that it looks like EmbLibrary puts everything on a felt. I figured I’d give that a go but I put the felt underneath the brown fabric with the stabilizer. The combination turned out REALLY nicely – much better than the original attempt. I’ll have to remember that trick for the future.
The ultimate outcome of that idea is this pillow:
Overall, I think it’s very nice. I love the contrasting colors, and the turquoise ruffle was just too perfect! It was also a nice fun project that I could finish all in one day, which is always a welcomed relief. Just need to add 1/2″ to the seams on the back of the block (I have a standing order for 46 more pillows of my design), since the overlap in which you can stuff the pillow form is just a hair too short.
For a closeup of the Fairy, here’s the image from the company that I purchased it from:
