Classroom and Work Samples
Maybe it’s just me, but I actually stress about what I can post. I get frustrated because I don’t have much time to do work at home. A few days ago I’m thinking about this conundrum as I’m putting the finishing touches on an Anita Goodesign embroidered placemat for a May workshop when it suddenly hit me: I make all kinds of stuff for work. Who says I can’t post that?
The classroom that I teach in at The Sewing Café had largely blank walls. The owner wanted to cover the walls with quilts, but we’re not a quilting store. I decided to take a wall and put all of the class samples on it. We use it to inspire people to take classes, as samples of techniques that the machines can do and anyone can learn, and it’s also fun to nail things to the wall. There have been a lot more samples added since this picture was taken, but these are all classes that I have taught in the last year.
While today’s class was an easy elastic waistband skirt and will be followed with some more garments, the previous mini series introduced the students to some of the quilting genre techniques.
This little guy was a fun hotpad with an appliqued heart on it. Students got to play with basic raw edge applique where they put on the WonderUnder, ran their fabric through the Go Baby heart die, positioned the result and then stitched around it. After that, we did a very simple binding. I’m encouraging them to play with decorative stitches when it comes to stitching-in-the-ditch. Not only because it’s fun, but it’s also often easier for someone struggling to sew a straight line to stitch down all sides of the binding simply and attractively if they use a wider stitch like the satin stitch I used on this sample. Now, the flowery hippy heart hotpad is nailed to the wall with all the others. *grin*
I’m trying to highlight my student’s accomplishments and victories by taking pictures of their creations and posting them to my Pinterest board as well as the Pinterest board for The Sewing Café which I maintain when time permits. I have a huge backlog of images to put up, but I’ll get to them.
Until we meet again, Happy Sewing!
