Art Quilt Gift Now Has Forests
The Art Quilt gift is coming along nicely. It features mountains in the distance with trees on them. I tried using my HV 6D embroidery software’s photostitch capability to embroider the trees. Since I wanted them to stand out, I did not want to embroider them directly to the quilt.
While the concept ultimately worked out, this particular iteration was a complete failure. The forests looked more like heavy duty patches and they were ugly. I was disappointed and nearly ready to burst into tears when Jane gave me another suggestion. She comes from a freehand machine embroidery background and she showed me how to use little circles overlapping each other to create a variety of effects.
This is the method that proved to be exceedingly viable and the results blew me away. Here’s the process. After taking the photo source images into 6D and sized correctly, I drew over each section of forest in multiple colors to create the effect.
I then went to my HV Diamond Deluxe and started the process of embroidering them out. Following another of Jane’s suggestions, I embroidered them onto a dark green netting – you can see the edges of it in the image below. It was also embroidered onto water soluble fibrous stabilizer.
Here is one segment of forest, embroidered, trimmed and ready to be rinsed then placed.
Can you see the same forest down at the bottom of this picture with the yellow headed pin? Looks a bit different without the stabilizer! After all the forests were individually placed, now it was time to stitch them down!
I used a clear monofilament thread to do the tacking down. I know I could have used another shade of green, but that might have messed up the shadows and shaping and if I accidentally stitched outside the tree lines, it’s invisible.
And once everything was all tacked down, I stood back … and was shocked. It looks GORGEOUS! Those embroidered forests look so good! I was dancing around excited.
The next aspect were the standing stones at the bottom of the quilt, which I’ll do a post on later. Right now, I’m digitizing the larger, closer forests in the midground and working to get some of the individual trees done. After that, it’s time for the sheep!! Eeek.
Running out of time….
Until next time, Happy Sewing!
