Crochet Shawl

After the ugliest afghan was completed, my next project was the crochet shawl found in the same book as the learn-to-crochet afghan. I found a nice wool/mohair blend yarn and then started in. My first attempt was horrible. I lost count, failed to move the markers reliably, and didn’t interpret the instructions very well. I got a fair ways and then threw the whole thing away, so I could start over since the yarn did NOT want to unravel as smooth yarn does. Overall, it came out very well.

I was disappointed in how short it was. I thought it was longer, at least to thigh level, but it’s not. It’s only waist length.

It’s not perfect, but consideirng it’s my first crochet garment, I’m rather happy with it.

Figuring out the proper method of moving the counting markers made a major difference in keeping track of where I was. I also did the trick of using another set of counting markers spaced at 25 stitch intervals. It made counting the decreasing rows MUCH easier and faster.

  1. Very pretty!

  2. I don’t know if this would interest you, but I saw it on the bargain table at the local B&N this past weekend:

  3. Very pretty shawl! Do you enjoy knitting or crochet better? A couple weeks ago I found the brown&white crocheted poncho I made for you as little girl. I made a matching one for me as well. I left it out and when we watch Erin & Nate the first of Sept., I want Erin to wear it. I will take a picture and send you. Another generation enjoying the same garment. Your shawl is really very pretty, and you should be proud of your hard work.
